Happy New Year: New Year's Resolutions For Kids

Happy New Year! The beginning of each year is a great time to sit down as a family, look ahead and set resolutions.

Setting New Year’s resolutions with kids can be a great opportunity to bond and learn more about each other. Selecting resolutions can be a group activity with your family, so you can get to know one another’s priorities and goals. Here are some tips for setting resolutions and some suggestions for New Year's resolutions for kids.

Tips for Setting New Year’s Resolutions For Kids

  1. Keep it positive. Resolutions should be positive behaviors or goals that kids can work toward, rather than negative behaviors you want them to stop.

  2. Ask the right questions. Sometimes kids will need a bit of prompting to think of New Year's resolution ideas. Ask them questions such as: What hobbies do you want to get better at this year? What is a subject you’d like to learn more about? What sport would you like to practice more?

  3. Give your child the independence to choose. Resolutions will be most successful if you give your child the freedom to choose one (or multiple!) for themselves.

  4. Help your child choose realistic goals. Sometimes kids can get way ahead of themselves and set goals that are unrealistic — like running 10 miles every day, for example. Talk with your child about their goals and encourage them to choose parameters that are safe and achievable.

  5. Make a family resolution board. Create a family resolution board that displays all the resolutions you’re making as a family. This way, you can cheer each other on and everyone feels included. Leave space on the board for family members to put stickers every time they achieve their goal.
